Dr. Lonna Atkeson Dr. Lonna Atkeson director of UNM's Center for the Study of Voting, Elections, and Democracy, will give the real story of the recent election, based on careful analysis of the data. Dr. Atkeson has done research on election, campaigns, media. public opinion and political behavior. The Center's purpose is to promote the non-partisan study and evaluation of how elections are conducted, the role of technology, identification of best practices and the effect of various election practices on the quality of representation within democracies.

Gabriel Campos and Cameron Crandall, MD will be the speakers, and will address domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking from the perspectives of legal and medical providers. Mr. Campos is the COO at New Mexico Legal Aid, and is currently serving on the NM Adult Parole Board and the NM Intimate Partner Violence Death Review Team. Dr. Crandall is Professor and Vice Chair for Research at UNM's Department of Emergency Medicine. His research interests inclue injury and violence epidemiology, and was one of the original investigators on the NM Intimate Partner Violence Death Team.

All members are welcome and encouraged to attend LWVCNM's Annual Meeting. Registration starts at 9am, the business meeting at 9:30, and brunch will begin at 11:00.
See your April Voter for all the details. You will want to bring a hardcopy of your April Voter to the meeting. Members will be able to weigh in on the League's local positions, changes to the Bylaws, question the proposed budget, and elect the next slate of Board members.
Brunch Speaker: Police Chief Ray Schultz on Reducing Gun Violence. Chief Schultz has been police chief since 2005 when he was appointed by Mayor Martin Chavez. He has announced that he will retire in July.

LWVNM Convention

The League's State Convention will be held in Las Cruces, hosted by LWV GLC. A full schedule has been planned, to include proposed changes to the League's positions, bylaws, and program, and presentation of the draft 2013-2015 budget. Former Governor Garrey Carruthers will speak at the Saturday banquet, while Sen. Martin Heinrich's Las Cruces representative, Jake Rollow, will address Immigration Reform at the opening Saturday luncheon.
All the details can be found in the Spring 2013 La Palabra. For more information, see also the Convention page. Each local League will send delegates, but any member may attend as an observer.

The Economic Benefits of Health Care Spending. Nick Estes, a board member of Health Action New Mexico, will be the speaker. Mr. Estes worked as a policy analyst for New Mexico Voices for Children and developed a number of policy papers on this subject.

McMullan, a New Mexico native, has been recruiting physicians since 1976 and has been involved in health services in 16 out of New Mexico's 33 counties. His current employer, New Mexico Health Resources, Inc. is a non-profit, no-fee agency organized to support efforts to recruit and retain healthcare personnel for communities, including the rural and medically underserved areas in New Mexico.

Mr. Moffett is an assistant professor in UNM's Department of Family and Community Medicine, and a Health Economist fro the Robert Woods Johnson Institute for Public Health. Mr. Mason, a long-time League member and chair of the LWV NM Action Committee, is also a board member of Health Action of New Mexico.

"Climate Change: the data behind the conclusions": Kimberly Samuels-Crow has a MS in Geochemistry and is working on a Ph.D. at UNM's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. She will discuss how the data shows that the earth's climate is changing, largely due to increased concentrations of human-generated carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Dr. Saunders will discuss how international students enrich the community and UNM's effort to become more of an international university.
