General Voting Information

GENERAL ELECTION, Tuesday November 8, 2016

A General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. A General Election is held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in each even-numbered year. This General Election will fill the offices of President, United States Senator, United States Representative, and districted New Mexico offices and county positions.

If you are a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age or older on Election Day, and registered to vote, you may vote in this General Election.

How To Vote on ELECTION DAY

Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on November 8. You must be registered to vote by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11, to vote on Election Day.

Since 2010 precinct voting has been consolidated into Vote Centers. Information on your county's Vote Center locations is available online through the Secretary of State's office at voterview.state.nm.us or by contacting your County Clerk. Some Vote Centers are listed under Early Voting.

The printed Voters’ Guide and PDF have incomplete lists of Bernalillo County early voting locations! Here are the correct lists:

Voting for Traditional Rural Precincts in Sandoval County: If you are registered in a Traditional Rural Precinct (outside of Rio Rancho or Corrales) you may vote at your traditional precinct location or at a Vote Center in Corrales or Rio Rancho. WARNING: Voters from Traditional Rural Precincts who vote at Vote Centers on Election Day will vote on Provisional Ballots and not on a voting machine. This means your vote may not be counted, and you will not receive a full ballot.

How to Register to Vote

You must be registered to vote by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11, to vote on Election Day. Voter registration applications are available online (at the County Clerks' and Secretary of State's websites) and at many public places including the County Clerk's office, all public libraries, and Motor Vehicle Division offices.

Voter Identification

TO VOTE - When you go to vote in person, either at Early Voting or on Election Day, you can choose to identify yourself by stating your name, year of birth, and registration address or presenting a physical form of identification such as

TO REGISTER - When you register to vote, identification is required only if you are registering for the first time in New Mexico and you are registering by mail. If you are registering by mail you can submit any current and valid photo ID, a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, student or tribal ID, or any other document that shows your name and current address with the registration form.

If you registered to vote by mail and did not provide a valid form of identification, then the first time you vote in New Mexico, either in person or absentee, you will need to show or submit one of the required forms of identification.

WRITE-IN VOTING

Write-in voting is permitted on the paper ballot as long as the person you vote for is qualified as a write-in candidate. A write-in vote can only be counted if the name written in is the name of a declared write-in candidate and shows two initials and last name; first name, middle initial or name and last name; first and last name; or the full name.

Writing in a name in a race where no write-in candidates are eligible will result in a spoiled ballot, which will not be counted at all.

PROVISIONAL BALLOT

You will be issued a provisional ballot if your name does not appear on the roster when voting in person during Early Voting or on Election Day, or if you are a first-time voter who registered by mail and you did not provide the required identification.

In Sandoval County on Election Day, voters from Traditional Rural Precincts who vote at Vote Centers in Rio Rancho or Corrales will vote on provisional ballots.

EARLY VOTING IN BERNALILLO COUNTY

From October 11 through November 5 you may vote "absentee in person" at ONLY the Bernalillo County Clerk's Annex location, Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m.:

From Saturday, October 22 through Saturday, November 5, (closed Sundays), you may vote early at following alternative voting sites throughout Bernalillo County. The hours are: 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. (except as noted below):

HOW TO VOTE BY ABSENTEE BALLOT IN BERNALILLO COUNTY

Request a Ballot – Request your absentee ballot by phone (505-243-8683), by e-mail (clerk@bernco.gov), by fax (505-468-1293), by visiting the County Clerk’s office located at One Civic Plaza NW (6th floor) in Albuquerque, or by writing the County Clerk at PO Box 542, Albuquerque, NM 87103-0542. Absentee ballot applications can also be completed online at www.bernco.gov/elections/. Absentee ballot applications must be returned to the County Clerk by mail or in person. Absentee ballots will be mailed to successful applicants beginning on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 and will continue through Friday, November 4, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.

Cast your Ballot – You may cast your absentee ballot by mail or in person. Mail your absentee ballot to the County Clerk’s office at PO Box 542, Albuquerque, NM 87103-0542. Absentee ballots may be cast in person from Tuesday October 11, 2016 through Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Annex. Annex hours are Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Annex is located at 111 Union Square Street SE in Albuquerque. Absentee ballots may also be cast at Vote Centers during early voting and on Election Day.

Absentee ballots must be received at the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office or at a polling location by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

EARLY VOTING IN SANDOVAL COUNTY

Early voting begins at the County Administration Building ONLY on October 11. This location will be open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until Friday, November 4. Early Voting at County Vote Centers begins October 22 and ends Saturday, November 5. These locations will be open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., except as noted below:

October 24-25 (Monday-Tuesday) 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

October 27-28 (Thursday-Friday) 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

October 3 (Monday) 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

November 3-4 (Thursday-Friday) 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

HOW TO VOTE BY ABSENTEE BALLOT IN SANDOVAL COUNTY

Request a Ballot – Request your absentee ballot by phone (505-867-7577) or by visiting or writing to the County Clerk’s office at 1500 Idalia Road, Bldg. D, Bernalillo, NM 87004. Absentee ballot applications can also be downloaded by visiting www.sandovalcounty.com/boe/ and clicking on the early/absentee voting button.

Absentee ballot applications must be returned to the County Clerk by mail or in person. The County Clerk’s office will verify the application information mail ballots to successful applicants. Friday, November 4 at 5:00 p.m. is the last day the County Clerk’s office will mail absentee ballots.

Cast your Ballot – You may cast your absentee ballot by mail or in person. Mail your absentee ballot to the County Clerk’s office at 1500 Idalia Road, Bldg. D, Bernalillo, NM 87004. From October 11 through November 4 absentee ballots may be cast in person Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 1500 Idalia Road, Bldg. D (County Administration). On Saturday, November 5 absentee ballots may be cast in person from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 1500 Idalia Road, Bldg. D (County Administration).

Absentee ballots must be received at the Sandoval County Clerk’s Office by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.
